Located within the Pisgah National Forest, the Bent Creek Experimental Forest was established in 1924 to conduct research on soil erosion and forest management practices. The Bent Creek trail system contains 30+ miles of trails around the Lake Powhatan Recreational Area. There are several parking areas and information kiosks around the recreational area.

The trails at Bent Creek are sections of singletrack interconnected with dirt and gravel forest roads. These roads are well marked with Forest Service signs and designations, but if you are unfamiliar with the area you should carry a trail map with you to stay oriented with the many trail options available.

At the organization website link above there are excellent trail maps and courses laid out for beginner, intermediate, and advanced rides at Bent Creek.

In the Attachments below, the gpx file "bent-creek-singletrack" shows the singletrack sections only. The gpx file "bent-creek" is a sample ride showing much of the intermediate trails. The topo map reflects this sample ride. There are many more miles of advanced trails that are not shown on this listing at this time.

BE PREPARED TO WORK!!!

This trail didn't look like it had been rode on in years. Everything was overgrown.
Horseflies were swarming. There was so much erosion that when it rained, there were puddles 6" deep.

But this was my first time riding in the mud, so I had a ton of fun. I really pushed myself, partially because if I stopped horseflies would eat me alive and partially because mud was different and new to me.

This ride showed me that different types of terrain, while sometimes scary, can also be exhilarating.
